2016 Aki Cup Sponsored by Air Golf #8 Report: Tsutsujigaoka CC

Final round Aki Cup golfers on the first tee at Tsutsujigaoka
The eighth and final event of the 2016 Aki Cup Sponsored by Air Golf was played on a crisp autumn day at Tsutsujigaoka CC yesterday. With five golfers in close contention at the start, Chris Hurquin had a great round, won the event and became the 2016 Aki Cup champion.

Chris, who won last week's event at Manago GC, shot a 67 (gross 87) and finished with 2,063 points for the winner's cup.  Hiroe Sakai carded a 72 (gross 102) to finish second in the event and second in the points race with a total of 1,976 points.  Coming in tied for third with 75 was Tom Moore (gross 85) and Matt Nielson (gross 88). Tom also finished third in the points race with 1,684.

After winning the championship, Chris said his "game has really gone through an improvement." He seemed a bit worried on the front nine trying to repeat his personal best performance from the previous week, but settled down and on a stretch of eight holes recorded six pars on a challenging course.  The 2,063 points he scored is an Aki and Haru Cup record.

The weather was sunny throughout the day and the course was more colorful than usual with lots of autumn leaves--kouyou--and snow on the ground from the rare November snowfall two days earlier. The mountain course was fun and challenging as usual with some tough pin placements--more than a few golfers recorded four putts in their rounds.

A Big Thanks
The 2016 Aki Cup was an overall success but it wouldn't have been possible without the help of several people.  First off, a big thanks to our sponsors Kieron Cashell of Air Golf and PGA professional Brian Joseph for donating prizes to make this the most generous Aki Cup yet. Thanks also to Paul Braganza of First Step Japan for sponsoring the big second event, the World Cup.

Next, a shout out to organizers Chris Hurquin, Steve Novosel and Yasu Iwatani for arranging the events. Putting the events together takes a lot of time and their effort is much appreciated.

Finally, thanks to all the golfers who took part. More than 40 different golfers played at one point or another.  It was great seeing old friends and meeting new ones over the season.

The Tokyo Golfers group will go into winter golf hibernation but will return in 2017 with the Haru Cup.  Hope to see you then!
