The 2014 Aki Cup got off to a nice start last Saturday at the beautiful and secluded
Kamo Golf Club in Chiba. 16 Aki Cup golfers experienced a course with a nice variety of hole designs, excellent maintenance, challenging greens and beautiful golf holes tucked deep in the woods of Chiba's Boso Peninsula. In the end, event organizer Yasu Iwatani took first place with a net 68 (gross 84). He leads the race after the first event with 530 points.
Low gross winner Marcos Tanaka (74) took second place and 350 points with a net 71. Dudley "Spike" Clarke used a new set of clubs to score a net 76 (gross 92) and third place with 260 points. Also worthy of mention is Alastair Macdonald who won two of the four closest-to-the-pin contests.
The weather was overcast and cool throughout the day and while there was a light drizzle in the morning, few golfers used umbrellas during play. This was the first time to play here for nearly all the participants and most seemed to enjoy the course very much. The steep, mountainous background and lush greenery gave the course beauty and a sense of the exotic. Still, it was quite challenging for most of the players. A number of holes were well defended with obstacles and multilevel greens that helped keep the group's scores higher than normal.
