Aki Cup #5: Kouyou Cup Report

The Kouyou cup, an autumn annual golf tournament in the Kanto area, played host to the fifth leg of the 2014 Aki Cup. And on a damp autumn day, Savuth Kong got his first Aki Cup win of the season with a net 66 (gross 79). Four people tied for second with a net 71.  Alastair Macdonald (gross 80), Steve Anthony (gross 81), and Hiroko Saito (gross 107) were among those in second place.

While the weather wasn't perfect yesterday, it wasn't bad either--overcast with some drizzle from time to time.  It was the first time for an Aki Cup event to take place at Murasakizuka Golf Course, and 18 golfers took on the Saotome and Ujiie courses. The 27-hole course has some very attractive holes and was in fine condition, especially the greens.  And one nice thing about playing here on a damp day is using the resort's onsen (hot springs)--not many mountain courses have this feature.

The event was organized by Steve Novosel and included some nice extra prizes and a side bet.  One prize, called the "honest golfer award," was for a golfer playing closest to his or her handicap.  This prize was a forged Fourteen wedge and went to Steve Anthony.  Another included a birijyo (last place prize) "won" by Andy Cheek with a net 85.  The side bet consisted of a stableford competition which was won by Savuth Kong, while second place went to Alastair Macdonald.

A big thanks to Steve for organizing the event and donating the nice prizes.  Also thanks to Yasuo Asoh for donating closest to the pin prizes.

With this victory, Savuth Kong moves back into first place with a comfortable lead of 287 points (1370 total). Jack is second with 1083 and Yasu Iwatani is in third with 840 points.  The next Aki Cup event, #6, takes place November 15th at Windsor Park in Ibaraki. For those thinking of joining, some spots are still available.
